What you are looking at

The zones follow borders, not straight lines of longitude, because every country chooses its own time. China keeps one zone across five hours of sun; India and parts of Australia run half an hour off; Nepal a quarter of an hour. The strip across the top shows the time in each zone as you look.

• Each colour band is one offset from UTC; the label gives the offset and the time there now.
• Summer time is applied on the right day for each place.

Questions

How many time zones are there?

Counting every distinct offset from UTC in use, there are about forty — far more than 24, because of half-hour and quarter-hour offsets and zones beyond ±12 hours in the Pacific.

Which country has the most time zones?

France, with twelve, thanks to its territories around the world. Among single landmasses, Russia spans eleven.

Is summer time shown?

Yes. The offsets are worked out for the day you look, so places that have moved their clocks show their summer time.
